Watercolor Blossom Poppy Card for Color Throwdown Challenge 449 #ctd449
Hi there!
I'm participating in the Color Throwdown challenge today, number 449, with the colours orange, brown and green. I decided to make a summery card for a birthday, that's adaptable to many occasions, and with some watercolor techniques and plenty of shimmer!
Take a look at the swatch for this week's Color Throwdown and be sure to check out the blog and take part in the challenge; it really is a lot of fun and a great way to challenge yourself!
--- Supplies Used ---
# Paper guillotine
# 300 gsm white card stock
# Scoring board
# Nesting stitched circle dies from The Works
# Xcut Xpress manual die cutting machine
# Laser printer film (acetate)
# Poppy stamp from Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous Flower Garden set
# Ranger Archival Ink in Jet Black
# Faber Castell black PITT pen in XS and M
# Santoro Willow stamp set (not sure what it's called)
# Luminarte Twinkling H20s in Chestnut
# Cosmic Shimmer Iridescent Watercolours Set 2 - Carnival Brights (Holly Leaf colour)
# Round gold taklon brush from The Works
# Nylon detail brush from The Works
# Beaker of water
# Spray bottle of water (recycled)
# Gansai Tambi watercolour paints (No. 33 - Orange, No. 55 - Green and No. 46 - Brown)
# Spectrum Noir clear Sparkle overlay pen
# Crafter's Companion Sentimentals Spring is in the Air stamp set
# Crafter's Companion Sara Signature Collection Hello Beautiful stamp set
# 12x12" patterned paper from Vintage Experience pad from The Works
# We R Memory Keepers 1-2-3 Punch Board
# Red liner tape
# Glue dot
To make a card base with interest, I used a stitched circle die (doesn't need to be stitched) to cut a window along the opening edge of the card, then covered this with acetate. On the inside, I covered the adhesive with another panel of white card. I used the poppy stamp multiple times on the card front in archival ink, then the Santoro Willow figure on the inside of the card to add interest through the window. I filled in details with Faber Castell PITT pens and then set to watercoloring.
The flower centres were coloured using the Chestnut Twinkling H20s, as were the seeds and the figure's hair. Around the edges of the flowers, I added a line of Holly Leaf from the Cosmic Shimmer palette to really help them stand out from the background and achieve a crockery pattern feel. The petals were colored with Gansai Tambi watercolor paint in Orange (No. 33).
On the inside of the card, I coloured the poppies in the matching orange from the front, and watered this down for the bodice, lips and hair ornament. For the skirt, I used green (No. 55) and faded it to the centre to create a translucent look. For the skin, I used brown (No. 46). This can appear realistic when used palely, but when applied intensely the colour seems a little too red. I applied too coats to give an ethereal air to the figure, then went over the image with a sparkle pen.
On the card front, I stamped 'Blossom on your special day' from two stamp sets; this is intended as a birthday card but can be adapted for many occasions. Plus it's nice to go with a non-standard sentiment sometimes! On the back, I stamped Santoro London as the figure is from this brand. I'll add Cornflower Iris branding later.
For the envelope, I used a neutral patterned paper to make an envelope box; it was cut to 8" 3/8 square then punched and scored at 3" 1/2 on the punch board. After sticking together with red liner tape and a glue dot, this completes the card.
